  WHAT

International conference “the philosophy of customary law” organized by CRHI, Centre of Research in History of Ideas, member of Université Côte d’Azur.

WHEN / WHERE

Nice (FR), 14-16 May 2018.

TOPICS

This conference will gather a wide range of contributions dealing with the philosophical issues concerning customary law. Far from considering the phrase “customary law” as a self-evident truth, this event aims to identify and try to solve the many tensions created by the juxtaposition of two separate but parallel forms of social regulation: law and custom. Panels include:

  • The ontology of customary law / L’ontologie du droit coutumier
  • Customary law, property, space / Droit coutumier, propriété, espace
  • Custom, « below » customary law ? / La coutume, « en-deçà » du droit coutumier ?
  • The realms of customary law / Les domaines du droit coutumier
  • Understanding custom through its history / Comprendre la coutume au regard de son histoire (1)
  • Custom, the Law and the State / La coutume, le droit, l’État
  • Réflexions sur le droit coutumier kanak / Studies on kanak customary law
  • Understanding custom through its history / Comprendre la coutume au regard de son histoire (2)

Here you can check the complete planning. Presentations will be in English or French, and discussions will be held in English for most of the conference.

The conference welcomes visitors at the various panels. However, for security reasons it will be necessary to register by writing to Marc Goetzmann (marc.goetzmann@unice.fr) and Edoardo Frezet (edoardo.frezet@gmail.com).
